Outdoor Custom Upper Level Deck Designer
Upper Level Deck Designer for Your Home’s Second Story Outdoor Deck
An Upper Level deck is any deck that’s high enough where there's actually a door underneath the deck, such as a walkout basement. Traditionally they are 8-9 ft off the ground but an upper level deck is also going to cover any decks that are above a second-story deck, like a master suite deck.
High Quality Materials Like Composite Decking To Make Your Upper Level Deck Withstand the Denver Seasons
When considering hiring a contractor to rebuild or to install a second level deck there's a handful of things you want to keep in mind, one is how that deck is supported. You always want to make sure that the contractor is installing either a 5 x 6 Alaskan yellow cedar Blue lam support column or a 6 by 6 Heart Redwood or s4s cedar support beam. You never want to use a pressure treated support post in the Second Story environment Colorado. It is just too dry of a climate in those 6 by 6 Southern yellow pine treated posts, although more affordable, in our climate, will always twist or cup or bow given enough time.

Save on Cost With Our Upper Level Deck Designer Plans With No Stairs
With the second-story deck we find that a lot of homeowners are considering more and more, due to the increased cost of replacing Decks, that when you have a second-story deck, you don't typically have to have a set of stairs, it’s a great way to save some cost. Stairs could add anywhere from $10,000 to $18,000 to a deck’s reconstruction. If the set of stairs comes directly off the deck, that's the most affordable set of stairs. Those typically install for $9,000, just shy of $10,000. If you have a landing at the top or in the middle that allows you to change directions, those Landings can add anywhere from $2,800 to $5,800 depending on the size of that landing.
How much does it cost to build a deck with stairs?
Installing a deck stairway or deck stairs can be a great way to enhance your outdoor space. On average, the cost of having a wood deck staircase professionally installed is around $115 to $210 per stair or $440 to $1,350 for most common projects.
As long as you have a walkout basement, code requires that you maintain the legal egress off of the front of the house as well as the rear of the house. So if you currently have a second-story deck with a set of stairs, and the budget is fairly tight, you always have the option to consider having that deck rebuilt and removing the stairs.
What is a high level deck?
Create an outdoor living space that is high above the ground with a raised deck! A raised deck is defined as one that is higher than 24 inches above the ground and is attached to the house. A railing around the perimeter is required, and building permits are necessary. Elevated deck plans include the use of a ledger board for optimal design. Start planning your raised deck today!
The other consideration with a second-story deck, we get a lot of requests for dry systems and drainage Systems, what I will say as a professional deck builder that's been building decks in Denver Colorado since 1984 and we've installed every sort of under deck drainage system you can imagine our strong recommendation is to go ahead and just leave that drainage system off.
Does a deck need to slope away from house?
ADD content here
We have a very harsh climate, so if at all possible we would discourage you from doing an under-deck drainage system. It’s Colorado, it's not Florida. Seattle, Washington where they get a lot of rain necessarily, when it rains in Colorado, we don't tend to want to be outside a whole lot anyway and when it snows like it is today of course we're not typically hanging out outside, and as long as we shovel the snow off of the deck you don't have to worry about it dripping down onto the deck and ground underneath.
